Patricia (Pat) Joan Schwartz passed away on December 13th, 2017 in Omaha, NE surrounded by her family ending her battle with Alzheimer’s and Lewy Body Dementia. She was a courageous and gracious wife, mother, and grandmother.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 6th from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm with service at 3PM at the Sioux City Girl Scout Leadership Center, 1515 Zenith Drive, Sioux City, IA.

She was born on April 28th, 1939 in Council Bluffs, IA, the daughter of William and Birchie Darner. She was the older of two children. She grew up in Logan, IA, for the majority of her childhood and graduated from Nevada High School in Nevada, IA. While attending Drake University, she found the love of her life, Joseph Gerald Schwartz. Pat and Joe were married on August 30, 1958.

She and Joe relocated throughout the first few years of their marriage eventually settling down in Denison, Iowa. In Denison, Pat and Joe owned the Denison Drug Store. They eventually moved to Sioux City, IA, in 1998 to be closer to their daughter.

Pat was active in the community, especially through her volunteering with Girl Scouts and teaching piano lessons. Pat’s passion was helping the youth of her community. Her involvement with Girl Scouts included serving as neighborhood chair, troop leader, and trainer. She was a leader for not only her daughter and granddaughters, but also countless other girls. Pat even attended the Girl Scouts National Convention as a delegate for Iowa.

Pat was an amazing pianist and shared this talent and passion with many Siouxlanders by giving piano lessons. Some of her students went on to the Jazz Band in the High School and one of her students plays with Grammy Award winning Taylor Swift. In addition to her love for music, Pat enjoyed cooking. Her forays into the kitchen resulted in her famous breakfast rolls, rocky road bars, and apple slices, to name just a few.

Survivors include her three children and their families: Jeff and Amy Schwartz and their two sons Henry and Will of Annandale, New Jersey; Cindy Kinzey and her two girls Jennifer and Sarah of Omaha, Nebraska; and Chris and Kelly Schwartz and their son Cole of Frisco, Texas. She is also survived by her brother and his family; Tom and Mary Darner and their two children Mike and Becky of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Joseph Schwartz.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Pat’s name may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association. This association helps in the fight for a cure to Lewy Body Dementia Disease.
